Crescendo Transition: ForteSuzuki Workshop & Common Reading |
Crescendo Transition: Forte is for all third-year students and is taken during the Fall of their third year at Crescendo College. This course is meant to help students where they are and where to go next. This is the last course in the Crescendo Transition and is meant to prepare students for the new responsibilities they will encounter as 4th and 5th year students. After this year, students will become mentors (rather than be mentored). In addition, students will be prepared to teach the first two levels of Suzuki to students, and may want to prepare for finding students/jobs in this area during the 4th and 5th year. This course is dedicated to helping students become student leaders, develop and articulate sense of self, and start to prepare students for the job market.
Through this course students are paired with a peer mentor (who will also be assisting students with weekly supervised practice). Research has shown the peer mentoring can create positive changes in students such as interpersonal relations, attitudes and motivation. Through their mentor, students gain a early connection to the university which enhances their sense of community. When a student has heightened sense of community, they experience less loneliness and worry, higher self-perceptions of happiness and enjoyment in life, and coping ability, as well as greater scholastic competence, social acceptance and global self-worth and sociability. |
As part of Crescendo Transition: Mezzo-Forte, all students will receive training in teaching Book 2 of Suzuki. One of the most popular, accessible formats in which Suzuki training can be obtained is through intensive week-long courses offered at teacher workshops during the school year and summer institutes. Crescendo students are lucky enough to provide training right here on campus as a part of the Crescendo transition course. After students have completed training they are qualified to teach all students Book 2 of the Suzuki pedagogy.
Common Reading: The Suzuki Concept: An Introduction to a Successfull Method of Early Music Education-Shin'ichi Suzuki -During the past ten years a "Suzuki Explosion" has taken place in the musical life of the United states. More than 100,000 children, aged three and up, have been taught to play the violin, piano, cello, and flute through the method conceived by Dr. Shinicki Suzuki. Their facility has amazed most observers. They have demonstrated musical skills, improved learning ability, and a deeper relationship with their parents, teachers, and communities. Their talents stand as tributes to the Japanese violin master who is one of the giants in the field of early education. In this book, Dr. Suzuki and many of his leading advocates in the United States explain the philosophy, psychology, and procedure that characterize his method. The Suzuki Concept contains photographs, musical examples, and charts and diagrams that show how Dr. Suzuki's humane and successful principles may be applied to early education in music and in many other fields. --- from book's back cover -This Common Reading gives a level playing field for all first year students and provides discussion points that are encouraged to be discussed in and outside the classroom. All first-year students read this book which means that every student at Crescendo has read this and can discuss important aspects of the book with others. -Although not all students are interested in education, this book helps give a glimpse into the practices of teaching young children. After three years of Suzuki training students have the option and ability to teach, even if their double major is not Education. |
