Regina Davis '00, Dual Degree in Psychology and Music Performance (Flute Concentration)
Dr. Regina Davis graduated from Crescendo College in the year 2000 with a dual degree in Psychology and Music Performance: Flute. As a young girl, she always had a love for music but it wasn't until her first year at Crescendo that she realized her interest in Psychology and Mental Health. “During my first semester in Crescendo Transition: Piano, we had to go to the Counseling Center for a session, and then write a reflective essay. As a young girl I was always a perfectionist, but I never realized how anxious it made me. I was suffering from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder in silence; until my Counseling Session ” Upon arriving at Crescendo College, Davis felt sure she wanted to become a professional flutist and educator, originally double majoring with music and education. “I just knew I enjoyed music, and I wanted a back-up plan if performance was too far out of reach” recalls Collins. “I never realized that Music Therapy was even an option; not until my first visit to the Counseling Center, something that would never have happened without Crescendo Transition.” At then end of Regina's counseling appointment, her Counselor Abbey Hoover explained that Regina had Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, something that could be treated with psychotherapy and an anti-anxiety medication. "I never realized how unhappy I was until I felt better" explained Regina. "Abbey had a way of using my love for Music to help me through my anxiety... something I don't think I could have gotten from another Counseling Office because of our strong music emphasis at Crescendo" It was at this point that she realized that Music Therapy was a possibility and Regina changed her double major to Psychology and Music. From there, she never looked back |
After graduating Summa Cum Laude in 2005, Abbey went on to graduate school in Clinical Psychology, teaching private lesson (thanks to her Suzuki training), and participating in local orchestras.
"I don't think I would be where I am now it if weren't for Crescendo Transition courses forcing me to use resources that I would have been too scared to use otherwise" explains Davis, "Because of common experiences we all had, I never felt stigmatized for using the Counseling services office. We all went there at least 3 times." “Crescendo College influenced every part of my life,” states Davis. “It was a place where excellence is more expected than sought-after. The curriculum is individually tailored to every student, and there are no boundaries. Your education is what you make of it. Every faculty member with whom I interacted was there as a resource for me.” Upon Graduation from University of Pennsylvania 2009 with a PhD in Clinical Psychology, Regina is living her dream. "I'm working as a Music Therapist out of my home in the heart of New York City, working with students just like myself, and of course using my Suzuki training. What kind of Crescendo graduate would I be if I didn't incorporate the Suzuki philosophy in my everyday life? Davis looks back on her Crescendo College experience with something like awe. “I met some of my best lifelong friends there,” she says. “They were exceptional people with whom I shared common goals and principles. I truly believe that Crescendo College has change my life for the better. With out the help I received and the amazing curriculum, I wouldn't be as prepared or as successful as I am today" |
