Students need a wide-ranging and cross-disciplinary knowledge, higher level skills, an active sense of personal and social responsibility, and a demonstrated ability to apply knowledge to complex problems. What students need is a liberal education that can produce these outcomes.
Liberal education, in the most general sense is education that liberates and opens the mind, thus preparing students for responsible action The study of the liberal arts creates a freedom of thought, something that all students should have. A liberal education should be for all students and all institution-types to help students become cognitively, emotionally, and practically competent. We believe that the task of undergraduate college is to relate values of liberal learning to vocation: in Crescendo's case, music performance and composition. This vocation is not something to be separated from the general area of knowledge, but something that can be strengthened by a liberal education curriculum. We believe that our students should have a balance between technical knowledge in a specialized field as well as broad knowledge of the world around them. Finding a balance between the two is to create a cognitively competent individual that knows a little about a lot, a lot about a little, and is able to continue educational growth after graduation. We believe that if a student wants to pursue a vocational career, this should not stop them from still receiving the educational and mind-opening benefits of a liberal education |
