Second Year: Mezzo-forte |
Crescendo Transition: Mezzo forte is for all second-year students and is taken during the Fall of their secondyear at Crescendo College. This course is meant to help students understand where they are now, and where they would like to go from that. At this point students may have a general idea of how they operate as a student at Crescendo College and are ready to perfect study habits and ensure they are using their time in the most effective way possible.
Through this course students are paired with a peer mentor (who will also be assisting students with weekly supervised practice). Research has shown the peer mentoring can create positive changes in students such as interpersonal relations, attitudes and motivation. Through their mentor, students gain a early connection to the university which enhances their sense of community. When a student has heightened sense of community, they experience less loneliness and worry, higher self-perceptions of happiness and enjoyment in life, and coping ability, as well as greater scholastic competence, social acceptance and global self-worth and sociability. |
Suzuki Workshop & Common ReadingAs part of Crescendo Transition: Mezzo-Forte, all students will receive training in teaching Book 1 of Suzuki. One of the most popular, accessible formats in which Suzuki training can be obtained is through intensive week-long courses offered at teacher workshops during the school year and summer institutes. Crescendo students are lucky enough to provide training right here on campus as a part of the Crescendo transition course. After students have completed training they are qualified to teach all students Book 1 of the Suzuki pedagogy.
Common Reading: Where Love is Deep: The Writings of Shin'ichi Suzuki -This book is an introduction to the philosophy of Suzuki. This book focuses on the concept that talent is not something that is inborn but is something to be fostered. Students must learn to listen and hear not only with their ears but with their heart -This Common Reading gives a level playing field for all second year students and provides discussion points that are encouraged to be discussed in and outside the classroom. All second-year students read this book which means that every student at Crescendo has read this and can discuss important aspects of the book with others. |
